 | Why did you join Macy's Corporate Services and why have you stayed? | |
After college, I wanted to work with a company that offered a lot of opportunity and growth and Macy's, Inc. seemed to be a match for my interests. Since joining the company, I've had great managers and the opportunities to utilize my skills, gaining experience in both accounting and business. Additionally, the people I work with are excellent.
 | What do you enjoy most about what you do and what are your overall job responsibilities? | |
Business demands are always changing, resulting in a different dynamic every day, preventing me from doing the same things repeatedly. As a reporting programmer, I take information from our general ledger and create reports out of the data.
 | What contribution do you make to your division and how does this contribute to the company's overall success? | |
One of the main tasks that we do is generate financial reports. Upper management reviews the data to compile sales earnings and profit reports, and then uses the reports to make business decisions that affect the whole company. I present the data in a concise format, so they get a clearer picture of how the company is doing. I feel like I am really involved in company decisions because it is my responsibility to make sure the data is correct and presented in a useful manner.
 | What has been your most memorable moment since joining the company? | |
I think the most memorable moment in my career at Macy's, Inc. was back when I started. The company sent me to Las Vegas for a training course about one of the software products we use. It was very memorable not only because I was able to learn first-hand about a product I use on a daily basis, but because I was able to spend time in Las Vegas.
 | How has the training you've received since joining the company benefited you? | |
The best thing about the training the company provides is that it is hands-on. It is different from what I learned in college and it's very applicable to the job that I do, helping me do my job better and keeping me up-to-date. Training in our department is ongoing. If we run into a problem we need to solve, we investigate and look to our vast knowledge base to develop a solution. Our managers send us to classes, provide us with books or bring in experts to train us on the technology we need to learn.
 | Is community involvement important to you, have you been involved in any projects in your division and was this something you considered when joining the company? | |
Community involvement is very important to me. Through Macy's, Inc., I recently participated in the Corporate Olympics. It is an event that area companies compete in to raise money for the Special Olympics. I've also participated in United Way and Partners in Time programs. I like that Macy's, Inc. is so involved in the community.
 | What do you like best about your work environment? | |
I would definitely say the people are the best part of the environment. The dynamic here is great and everyone works very well together. If there is a problem, people aren't afraid to talk about it. Everyone genuinely cares about everyone else. It's a laid-back atmosphere. I work hard, and my boss trusts me to get my work done the right way.
 | What personal interests/hobbies do you have and how do you balance them with your work? | |
I enjoy sports, especially basketball and volleyball. Macy's, Inc. has offered discount memberships to a local gym, so I go there and play during my lunch hour. Sometimes after work I get together with my co-workers to play softball and hang out. Everyone here is very accommodating and flexible; if you need to leave early you are allowed to, as long as your work is done. The flexibility of the office really allows us to have a balanced life outside of work.
 | What advice would you give to a new employee joining the company in a position similar yours? What helped you establish yourself and move ahead with your career goals? | |
It's good for people to have a clear idea of where they want to go and what their interests are. When I came to Macy's, Inc., I knew what I wanted to do and where I wanted to be. I was able to express those feelings to my manager and they were able to have me work on projects that were directly related to those goals. The support I received allowed me to work toward my goals and gave me opportunities to advance.
